1. Equipment Needed to Demolish an Outdoor Kitchen
First, don't go spending 100s of dollars on new tools we can get this demo knocked out with very minimal. Here are some of the tools you will need.
Tools:
Box cutter
Pry bar
Sledgehammer
Wedge
Mallet
Reciprocating saw
5-gallon bucket
Heavy Duty trash bags
PPE:
Safety glasses
Heavy-duty pants
Heavy-duty work gloves
Boots
Hard Helmet
Pro Tip: Consider renting a dumpster or hiring a Junk Removal company to haul away the construction debris.
Most of these tools and PPE equipment might be lying around the house. If not, attempt to source them from neighbors or friends to help save some time and money.
2. Secure The Utilities
Before we get carried away, bashing the countertops with a sledgehammer we have a very important step to accomplish. Find any water lines, gas lines, or power lines running to the outdoor kitchen. Securing the power at the breaker box is your best bet to ensure a safe demo. A water on/off switch should be easily accessible and close to where the drain is.
3. Demolish the Counter Tops
The easist way to remove the counter tops is to take them off. Smashing them into pieces only makes the cleanup process twice as long. To remove the counter tops you will need to use your razor knife or box cutter along the edge and cut the silicone. Once the silicone has been cut you will put your wedge or pry bar in the crease and use your mallet to hammer the wedge in further. The counter tops normally are glued down onto the frame but not completely, only a couple sections of glue are typically placed down when securing the counter tops down. After the counter tops have been freeded you should look to enlist the help of a spouse or friend to help lift the counter tops.
Pro Tip: Garanite is a commonly used material for outdoor kitchen countertops. It is heavy and requires two people to lift.
4. Remove Appliances
Once the countertops are removed you will have complete access to all your appliances. If your outdoor kitchen has a refridgaire it should be on wheels and easily roll out. The grill should be disconnected from any gas and also removed. This is a good time to disconnect your sink and remove as well. You may have a metal built in trash can that can easily be unscrewed.
Pro Tip: During this phase you will see if your have a metal frame or wood frame outdoor kitchen.
5. Demolish the Drywall and Frame
We are almost done! Knocking out the drywall is pretty straight forward. Use your sledghammer or mallet to remove the drywall. If you have a metal frame you may be able to just remove it by carrying it off. If not you can unscrew it or cut it with your reciprocating saw ( with a metal cutting blade ). For wooden frames using the reciprocating saw ( with a wood cutting blade) you will find to be the easist. After all the drywall and the frame has been removed now its time to clean up! Bagging all your construction debris in heavy-duty trash bags or demo bags.
